Book Synopsis

The series that has taken the US by storm comes to the UK in the first of an all-new Titan graphic novel series! From writer Brian K. Vaughan (Swamp Thing, The Hood) and up and coming artist Pia Guerra comes a view of a dystopian society where suddenly - and without warning - a mysterious plague kills every living creature on the planet with a Y chromosome...in other words, no more men! Except one. Amateur escape artist Yorrick Brown has somehow survived. It`s now a very different world, and his unique status is far from privileged. If they can`t exploit Yorick, the new world powers may just decide his usefulness is at an end!

Book Review

The first graphic novel in a stunning run. For me this is what vertigo comics are all about edgy reading by some of the best writers in comics. This comic could have been such a different read and degenerated into some kind of adolescent fantasy. Ask a lot of men imagine being the last man as some kind of endless orgy with all the women of the world after them and them as king, well a lot of the women in the world are after him but not for that orgy. His life becomes very much a political tool and he has to hit the road in secret only wanting to meet up with his girlfriend all the way in Australia. The best thing about this book is the well thought out characters the secretary of agriculture that becomes president as the highest ranking member of the cabinet to survive, the mysterious agent 335 that is assigned to look after Yorick and the best monkey in comics ampere seed also what is going on with his crazy sister Hero. The great thing is the characters are given time to develop Yorick is obviously in post traumatic stress questioning why he survived and not some one else and this is played out over time and not simply in one chapter and you get to see the world trying to adapt to the death of all males through carefully done character studies rather than sweeping views of the world. This is so refreshing for this kind of apocalyptic story a focus on the characters rather than the skeptical of the end of days and helps you to connect to the disaster in an emotional way rather than a purely intellectual way. The art work by Pia Guerra is functional but good suiting the tone of the story as it might seem a bit weird drawn by some one like Jim Lee don’t expect any comic book posing just crisp dialogue and down to earth real world graphics. All in all Y the last man is a classic and with it now reached a conclusion buy the first volume and you will buy the next volume and the next until you reach the end a journey I have already undertaken. The first Volume sets the scene and the rollercoaster sets off from there this is what comics can all be about and without a huge back stories to be concerned with a great way into what’s happening in comics today.

Best Scene
In a book this good where so much seems to happen its hard to choose but this is my favourite. Yorick has gone to see his mum a congress woman and bullets suddenly come flying through the window “Get away from the window Yorrick!” “Why who the hell is shooting at us mom? Terrorists?” the reply is great “worse… republicans.”
