Book Synopsis
Small town Louisiana has a big problem - or rather a number of big problems. And now some of them have come knocking on Sookie`s door ...Sookie is an unassuming cocktail waitress in an (outwardly) unremarkable town. She`s quiet, keeps to herself and doesn`t get out much. Attractive as she is, her hidden `talents` send men running. For some reason her mindreading skills are just a bit threatening ...Then the unreadable Bill appears on the scene. Tall, dark and handsome, Bill seems to be the man of her dreams. Except he`s not technically human. Bill is a vampire and a vampire who keeps seriously bad company, some suspected - unsurprisingly - of murder. Things get a bit close to home when a co-worker is murdered and Sookie starts wondering whether she will be next ...
Book Review
I really enjoy the Southern Vampire series, mostly because its like a breath of fresh air. Its fun! Not all the characters and broody and grim, and there`s a great sense of humour underlying much of the book.
SFX describe this as `Bridget Jones with fangs ... the best tongue-in-cheek vampire story I have ever read`, and I`d have to agree. The life of a girl in rural Louisiana, with added mindreading, vampires and shapeshifters thrown in for good measure.
I think my favorite character has to be Bubba, and I`m sure you`ll see why if you read the book.
Its not perfect - Bill, the main vampire, is very standoffish and not that approachable, so the depth of Sookie`s interest is a bit hard to fathom. The writing is enjoyable, but rather short by the standards of todays novels.
Still, its a great read, and I`d recommend the series to anyone for a lighthearted take on the supernatural.
