Book Synopsis

Once again, reluctant hero Commissar Cain is catapulted into glory in the fourth instalment of this tremendously popular series. Escaping from a disastrous space battle, the commissar and his malodorous sidekick Jurgen crash–land behind enemy lines. Even the sly Cain can’t avoid a straight fight this time, as the only way out is to round up what few troops they can find and fight their way back to safety. Unfortunately, hundreds of thousands of barbaric alien orks stand in their way! SF action and broad humour combine in this storming tale of battle, victory and mistaken heroism.

Book Review

I must confess, I absolutely adore the Ciaphus Cain series by Sandy Mitchell, and this is one of my favorite books. It really brings to life the major event that catapulted Cain from being just another Commissar (if a rather weaselly one) to the status of Hero of the Imperium, which both helps and hinders his life all through the other books.

His self serving attitude continues to amuse, and deliberate nods to other classics (like Star Wars - "I got one!" "Great, kid. Now don`t get cocky") really add a layer of depth that helps me go back to the book time and again, rather than simply reading it once and leaving it on the shelf.

It isn`t quite as amusing as some of the earlier books - his situation gives less leeway for vanishing from the front to enjoy life in town, but his thoughts on the situation and particularly Amberleys commentary is still hilarious.

This book is the start of a second trilogy, based around a particular piece of technology, the cogboys (the order of engineers) and the inquistors enforcing loyalty to the undying god-emperor. I thoroughly enjoyed this book - it does stand reasonably well read in isolation, though I`d recommend starting with Ciaphas Cain, Hero of the Imperium. I`d certainly recommend the entire series!
